Several local students were honored at the First Annual Youth Red Carpet Leadership/Service Award celebration, hosted by the West Central Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs.

The event was the kickoff for what is hoped to be the signature program for the West Central Georgia Chapter. The club is a non-profit organization that promotes and engages in educational, civic, and inter-cultural activities within its community. The club is committed to offering an array of services designed to have a positive impact on the residents in the communities it serves.

Trinity Christian students place at state art show

The first place and overall winners of the Coweta County local Kiwanis Club combined art and music competition on March 9 participated in the state event in Carollton on April 26.

Trinity High School students Josh Stanley and Sabina Acuff both moved to the state competition for their art work. Stanley’s piece was a pencil drawing, “Mother Mary,” and Acuff’s was a pen and ink and colored pencil drawing of her cat, Tiny.

Several local students recently earned degrees from Brenau University in Gainesville. They are, from Newnan: Maria Elena Ramsey and Victoria Ava Warner Robinson; from Fairburn: Tabatha Crafter Dixon, Charmaine Forts, Caleb James Hill, Nicole Bianca Isom, Kristal Wynette Turner-Coklow, Celia Michelle Williams, and Artenius Tonee Willingham; and from Fayetteville, Courtney Danielle Shropshire.

Summer programs offered at Coweta libraries

With the 2013-2014 school year at a close, summer vacation has begun for parents and students, and the Coweta County Library System is providing many different activities for both.

Jimmy Bass, director of Coweta’s library system, is excited about all four branches of the library will be offering.

Canongate Elementary holds Pre-K bash

Just prior to school letting out for the summer, Canongate Pre-K teacher, Ruth Prost, held a “Grand Finale” for her students.

“The early years of learning are the most essential for a child’s development, both socially and academically,” said Prost. “During these fundamental malleable years, a child strives to develop a sense of self and how they fit into the equation. I wanted each Pre-K student to experience and participate in a celebration that commended their accomplishments. My hope is that their first year of school left a positive and lasting impression.”

Neweta Club holds annual youth Black Awareness Pageant

The Neweta Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. hosted its 39th Annual Black Awareness Pageant April 12 at the Wadsworth City Auditorium

Family and friends of the contestants, and supporters of the Neweta Club attended the evening pageant again this year. Admission was free to the public. “Public support is sincerely appreciated,” said President Brenda Martin.

ECHS senior receives $5000 scholarship

Moises Escobar, a 2014 graduate of East Coweta High School received a $5000 scholarship from Delta Community Credit Union.

Escobar plans to attend Auburn University in the fall and major in biomedical engineering. He is an AP Scholar and a Georgia Merit Scholar, a distinction given to those who rank in the top five percent of their class, as well as being a scholar athlete.

Retiring school system employees honored

The Coweta County School System honored employees retiring during the 2013-2014 school year, with a dinner and ceremony at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts.

The retirees included teachers, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, custodians, principals, school nutrition workers, secretaries and school system administrators. Board of Education Chairman Winston Dowdell noted that the 100 retirees – 53 certified teachers and 47 classified employees - honored at Wednesday’s ceremony represented 2,249 years of experience in the school system.
